A multi-national joint venture is preparing a major expansion of a pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in Northwest Austin, committing $500 million to nearly double the size of the complex. The project involves ICU Medical and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory America Inc., IV solutions companies that focus on developing, researching and manufacturing products such as IV bags.
The partners plan to add a new manufacturing building of roughly 500,000 square feet alongside an existing facility of about 700,000 square feet. In addition to constructing the new plant, the joint venture intends to modernize the current facility as part of a broader upgrade to the campus. Those modernization efforts are expected to be completed in the mid-2030s, positioning the site for long-term production of IV-related products.
The venture is operating under the name Otsuka ICU Medical LLC for the new project. According to local reporting, the entity aims to begin site work later this month, followed by a groundbreaking targeted for August. The timing underscores a near-term push to bring additional manufacturing capacity online while also refreshing legacy infrastructure at the property.
The facilities sit on a 170-acre site at 3900 W. Howard Lane in Northwest Austin. ICU Medical acquired the property in 2017, laying the groundwork for the subsequent partnership-driven expansion. The large land footprint offers room for new construction as well as phased improvements to existing operations.
With substantial new square footage planned and a long-dated modernization program, the expansion reflects continued investment in specialized industrial space tied to the pharmaceutical supply chain. The scale of the project in Northwest Austin highlights ongoing demand for advanced manufacturing infrastructure in established life sciences and medical production corridors.
