HRP Group recently launched a video series highlighting the union workforce involved in deconstructing the former Boston Edison coal-fired power plant at 776 Summer Street. Since late 2021, HRP, Suffolk Construction, and NorthStar have successfully removed over 1.25 million square feet of structures and recycled 26,000 tons of steel while preserving four historic turbine halls. These halls will be repurposed for various commercial purposes such as retail shops, restaurants, civic spaces and research facilities.
The deconstruction project saw participation from nearly 500 skilled union workers who are being recognized through the Worker Showcase series. The series showcases their stories including Christine Repetto’s journey in construction and Kevin Nee’s enthusiasm about the positive impact this project will have on the community.
Apart from these developments at 776 Summer Street site itself, the redevelopment plan also includes provisions for public open space spanning across an area of approximately5.7 acres along with a waterfront promenadeand pathways. The project has also received approval to allow residential development on-site which is expected to enhance housing options while supporting maritime operations.
This marks another milestone achieved by HRP as they near completion ofthe deconstruction processfor Boston Power Plant without compromising on sustainability or quality standards.
