Howard Smith Retires as President of Walker & Dunlop

Howard W. Smith, III, president and member of the board of directors at Walker & Dunlop has announced his retirement effective January 1, 2024 after 43 years of service.

Smith expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join Walker & Dunlop: “I want to thank the Walker family for giving me an opportunity 43 years ago to join their company where I spent my entire career.” He also noted that he leaves behind a “outstanding management team” that will continue growing while preserving its unique culture.

Throughout his tenure with W&D, Smith played a critical role in transforming it into one of America’s top 6 commercial real estate lenders. His contributions have been significant not only within the industry but also in terms of benefiting both W&D and Greater Washington community as well. Donald P King III and Kris Mikkelsen will be assuming primary duties from Smith as co-leaders for capital markets group upon his retirement date next year .
