The Healey administration has taken action to support the implementation of the MBTA Communities Law in Massachusetts. This law requires all 177 communities in the state to have at least one zoning district that allows for multifamily development without any additional approvals. To ensure compliance with this law, emergency regulations have been filed by Gov. Maura Healey’s administration.
According to Gov. Healey, these regulations will help increase housing production and reduce costs throughout Massachusetts as they allow more time for communities that haven’t yet complied with the law to do so. The deadline for these communities has been extended and they must now submit a new action plan by February 13th and a district compliance application by July 14th.
As of now, only 116 out of the total number of communities have adopted multifamily zoning districts as required under this law which was enacted in 2021.
