Harbor Island West Marina is moving forward with a significant overhaul, with construction on a $70 million redevelopment scheduled to begin this month. The project is framed as a long-planned modernization intended to better serve recreational boaters, marine-related businesses and the broader San Diego community.
The marina property encompasses 3.8 acres of land and 22 acres of water, giving the redevelopment a sizable footprint across both shoreside and in-water areas. Plans call for substantial improvements on both fronts, aligning new facilities and infrastructure with the operational needs of boaters and water-dependent users while maintaining ongoing marina activity during the build-out.
When the work is completed, Harbor Island West Marina, located at 2040 Harbor Island Dr., is slated to feature 623 new slips. These slips are designed to accommodate a wide range of vessels, from boats measuring 20 feet up to larger craft of 140 feet. The increased and updated slip inventory is intended to support a mix of recreational users and marine-oriented tenants who depend on reliable berthing options.
In addition to in-water changes, the redevelopment includes an expanded package of boater-focused amenities on land. While specific features are not detailed, the plan emphasizes enhanced services and facilities intended to improve the user experience for slip holders and visitors alike. The redesign is also set to incorporate 16,000 square feet of commercial space, creating room for marine businesses and other compatible commercial users that serve marina patrons and the surrounding community.
Eric Leslie, CEO of Beauchamp Leslie Management & Development, characterized the undertaking as a long-term commitment to the property. He described the redevelopment as a major investment in the future of Harbor Island West Marina and highlighted the role of an experienced project team in advancing the construction phase. Leslie also underscored a focus on quality, safety and maintaining marina operations with as little disruption as possible while work is underway.
The marina’s redevelopment is backed by a new 50-year lease agreement with the Port of San Diego. The long-term lease structure provides a framework for the capital investment and establishes a multi-decade operating horizon for the upgraded facility. As construction begins, Harbor Island West Marina is positioned for a comprehensive refresh of both its landside and waterside components within one of San Diego’s key waterfront locations.
