Grubhub, an online food ordering company, will be relocating its headquarters to the Merchandise Mart as part of a trend towards downsizing office space. The move follows Grubhub’s efforts to cut costs and regain market share after being acquired by Just Eat Takeaway for $7.3 billion in 2021.
According to reports from Crain’s, Grubhub will reduce its downtown office footprint by approximately 45 percent through a sublease agreement with PayPal for about 90,000 square feet of space. This relocation comes from their current location at Burnham Center where they lease around 164,000 square feet.
The decision to sublease and downsize aligns with Grubhub’s cost-cutting measures and reflects the ongoing trend among companies in reducing their physical office presence. Vornado , owner of the Merchandise Mart has invested $40 million into renovating this landmark site including updates to the South Lobby and River Park areas. JLL has been selected as property management services provider for these renovations.
