Lendlease and joint venture partner Aware Super have commenced construction on 1 Java Street, an 834-unit residential development along the Greenpoint waterfront in Brooklyn. This project will be New York State’s largest geothermal residential building, setting a new standard for socially and environmentally sustainable living.
In addition to the geothermal system, 1 Java Street will be fully electric with no natural gas usage – aligning with Lendlease’s Mission Zero goal of achieving absolute zero carbon by 2040. The development also sets aside 30% of units as affordable housing and features a new public waterfront esplanade with a living shoreline plus 13,000 square feet of neighborhood-oriented retail space. As part of their joint venture Americas multifamily portfolio that achieved net zero carbon in 2021, this is the sixth project developed and operated by Aware Super & Lendlease together.
“1 Java Street pushes the boundaries for what is possible when it comes to sustainability,” said Claire Johnston CEO at Lendlease USA .
The groundbreaking event marks another milestone towards creating more sustainable communities across New York State while providing much needed affordable housing options within its borders.
