Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego recently broke ground on the largest construction project in its nearly 70-year history: a seven-story, 500,000 square foot Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Services Pavilion. Estimated to cost between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion, the new tower will house 140 intensive care unit beds and four operating rooms when it opens in 2027.
The structure will feature a new emergency department along with advanced pediatric, neonatal and cardiac intensive care units as well as flexible spaces that can adapt for different purposes over time to meet changing healthcare models of the future.
Patrick Frias, President & CEO of Rady Children’s commented on this generational transformation saying “We not only need to be sized appropriately for our community today but also built for the future so we can meet complex needs of families in decades ahead.”
