In 2019, the city of Mesa approved zoning for a data center campus. After this approval, plans for the project — called “Redhawk” — were revealed. The project is planned on more than 185 acres near the northwest corner of Sossaman and Elliot roads in Phoenix and will include a 288,530-square-foot data center building with a utility switchyard, medium voltage substation that services the data center (see photo), site entrance with security kiosk, public road improvements and an employee office building.
Google has agreed to complete construction on Redhawk’s first phase by July 2025 as part of its development agreement with Mesa City Council; they must also spend at least $600 million in capital expenditures along with $180 million in taxable construction costs over 25 years. Though Google won’t have to pay property taxes directly from this project itself; it is estimated that total state county local tax revenue generated over 25 years will be around $156.57 million dollars according to estimates from Mesa’s economic development office .
