City and state officials have joined Gilbane, Strada Development LLC and the Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) to celebrate the start of construction at 1920 Turnbull, a $175 million affordable and supportive housing project in the Castle Hill/Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx. The development is planned for 1920 Turnbull Ave. and is positioned as a new multifamily resource for local households and formerly homeless residents.
The first phase of 1920 Turnbull is designed as a 22-story residential tower with 228 affordable rental apartments. Within that total, 137 units are designated as permanent supportive housing for individuals and families who have experienced homelessness. The project is described as a combined affordable and supportive housing initiative, integrating long-term housing with on-site services.
Plans for the building call for a range of resident-oriented amenities. These include a lobby staffed around the clock, outdoor recreation space, a fitness room, a community room, bicycle storage and shared laundry facilities. The amenity program is intended to serve both the general affordable population and residents in the permanent supportive housing units, with services tailored to long-term housing stability.
CUCS is expected to play an active on-site role at 1920 Turnbull, operating a 3,500-square-foot office within the property. The organization will occupy this space to provide supportive services and programming for residents, aligning with the project’s focus on formerly homeless individuals and families. Construction on this initial tower is underway, with completion currently anticipated in March 2029.
The current work at 1920 Turnbull represents the first phase of a two-building plan for the site. A second phase is envisioned to add 207 more affordable apartments, with 18% of those units designated as supportive housing. Construction on Phase 2 is planned to start within the next year, subject to obtaining required approvals from the city. Together, the two phases are expected to materially expand the local inventory of affordable and supportive multifamily housing in the Castle Hill/Soundview area.
