Genentech, a subsidiary of Swiss drugmaker Roche Group, has officially started construction on a major expansion of its manufacturing campus in Hillsboro, Oregon. The company has broken ground on a $750 million project that will significantly enlarge its existing presence in the city.
The expansion advances plans Genentech announced in August to increase capacity for advanced drug delivery devices and to bolster its manufacturing base in the United States. The new construction will add a 211,000-square-foot facility to the site, effectively doubling the size of the current operation.
Commercial operations in the expanded facility are planned to begin in 2031, positioning the Hillsboro campus for a long-term role within Genentech’s broader production network. The project is expected to create approximately 250 new manufacturing jobs, adding to the local employment base and deepening the company’s investment in the region.
Genentech first established its Hillsboro campus in 2006. Since then, the site has grown into a 75-acre campus that plays an important part in the company’s global manufacturing and distribution platform. Current capabilities at the location include drug product manufacturing, packaging, distribution and support for individualized therapies.
With the new expansion, Genentech is aiming to bring device fill-finish manufacturing capabilities to Hillsboro. According to the company, this will support a more resilient domestic supply chain for its medicines and enhance the infrastructure needed to deliver future therapies.
“As construction begins we are one step closer to bringing device fill-finish manufacturing to Hillsboro, strengthening our domestic supply chain and investing in the people and infrastructure that will help us deliver the medicines of the future,” said Genentech CEO Ashley Magargee. Her comments underscore the strategic role the Hillsboro campus plays in the company’s long-range manufacturing and distribution strategy.
The combination of a large capital commitment, expanded facilities and new job creation further embeds Genentech’s Hillsboro campus as a key manufacturing hub within the Roche Group network, while reinforcing the importance of the site for advanced drug delivery and individualized therapies.
