Funding Secured for Charlotte Sports Facility

The Charlotte City Council has approved an additional $11.3 million in funding for the development of a sports and recreation center on the site of a former nonperforming mall. This brings the total city allocation to $41.3 million, with last year’s contribution of $30 million already approved.

Known as Eastland Yards, this project will feature a 100,000-square-foot indoor sports center and an outdoor hub with six multi-use artificial turf fields. The indoor facility will have 10 full-sized basketball courts that can also be converted for pickleball, volleyball, cheerleading tournaments and other events.

In addition to the city’s investment, four private entities will contribute a combined $25.8 million towards construction costs totaling $48 million for both the indoor center ($32.6 million) and soccer complex ($15.4million). It is estimated that this project will generate approximately$169million annually.

The former Eastland Mall property was purchased by the city government in 2012 and demolished in 2013 to make way for this new development on its 80-acre site.
