"Former UMass Lowell Campus: Where Conversion Begins"

Trammell Crow Residential has begun construction on Alexan Chelmsford, a 340-unit housing development located at 255 Princeton St. in the town of Chelmsford, MA. According to the Boston Business Journal, this project is situated on the former UMass Lowell west campus and is expected to be completed in Q4 of 2025.

The development will offer studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units as well as townhouse units with garages. Residents can enjoy various amenities such as a pool, outdoor courtyards, fitness facility, and resident clubhouse. Spanning nearly seven acres of protected wetland area,the site’s history dates back to its time as the Middlesex County Truancy School before being acquired by UMass Lowell in 1984.

In addition to Alexan Chelmsford,Trammell Crow Residential is also developing two other residential properties under their Alexan brand in Waltham and Peabody.Meanwhile,Umass Lowell has plans for further development near its east campus which may include student housing and research facilities,in collaboration with Pennsylvania-based developer GMH Communities.
