The GMDC, The Bridge and Mega Development joined forces to celebrate the completion of a new mixed-use development in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood. This $118-million project transformed the former Fox’s U-Bet Chocolate Syrup factory into the GMDC Brownsville Industrial Center.
The center features 39,000 square feet of light industrial space on its ground floor, along with Bridge Rockaway – a residential building offering 174 units of affordable and supportive housing above. Additionally, there is a community space spanning half an entire city block totaling 2,000 square feet. This groundbreaking project marks the first time in New York City that affordable housing and industrial space have been co-located on one site.
“After nearly eight years of planning, development and construction efforts,” stated Brian T. Coleman – CEO of Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center – “we are thrilled to finally open our doors.” He continued by saying that this project has achieved what many thought was impossible: providing safe and affordable access to both light manufacturing space as well as over 170 units for residents all within one location.
