"Expansion of SA Biomed Campus: Planning for a $210 Million Investment"

The Texas Biomedical Research Institute is embarking on a significant expansion of its West San Antonio campus. This ambitious $210 million project will involve expanding the structural footprint and capabilities of the 200-acre campus.

While some initial work has already been completed, such as the first phase of a new animal care complex and infrastructure improvements, most of the expansion is yet to come. By 2028, approximately $160 million worth of new projects are expected to be finished. This includes a state-of-the-art high containment structure spanning 30,000 square feet and featuring nearly 4,000 square feet dedicated to biosafety level 4 labs. The construction cost for this impressive BSL4 building is estimated at around $75 million.

In addition to this major facility upgrade, plans also include an Animal Health Center covering 18,000 square feet with an investment value of roughly $20 million. It is scheduled for completion by June 2026.

Other developments in store include new shipping and receiving facilities as well as maintenance facilities along with further infrastructure enhancements throughout the expanded campus area.
