The Erwin Center, a well-known venue for UT sports, concerts, and graduations since its construction in the 1970s, is now undergoing demolition. After nearly 50 years of hosting events and spanning over six stories with a total area of around 500,000 square feet, the center’s concrete walls are being taken down in reverse order to how they were built. This downtown landmark can be seen from I-35 as beams are exposed and it nears its end.
In August of 2023,the UT board of regents announced that the Erwin Center will be replaced by the new UT at Austin Medical Center which includes a hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center. The final events at the center took place in May of 2022 before demolition began in September with an estimated cost of $25 million.
According to Community Impact reports, the demolition project has employed about one hundred workers who aim to complete it this fall. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development as we bid farewell to an iconic structure that has been part our community for decades.
