The City of Glendale has announced that Erewhon, a popular upscale organic market and café with 10 locations throughout Southern California, has acquired the former Virgil’s Hardware Home Center on N. Glendale Ave. The retailer plans to open its 11th location in approximately 18 months, utilizing 18,000 square feet of the vacant property while leasing out the remaining space to complementary tenants.
Throughout their site selection process, Erewhon’s development team worked closely with Glendale’s Economic Development Division. They were particularly drawn to this historic building for its strategic location in the San Fernando Valley.
“We are delighted to welcome Erewhon to our city,” stated Bradley Calvert, Director of Community Development for Glendale. “Their presence will be a valuable addition as they offer an abundance of health and wellness options through their organic food choices and chef-inspired café.”
With roots dating back to 1932 in Glendale, Virgil’s Hardware was known for its unique offerings such as eggs and even antique doorknobs not commonly found at larger chain hardware stores. After closing its doors in 2019 after nearly nine decades of operation ,the store remained vacant until now.
