"Electric Excavator Pilot: Skanska's Contribution to the LA Metro Transit Project"

Skanska, a renowned construction and development firm, is currently conducting a trial of an electric excavator on the Los Angeles Metro’s Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project. This innovative Volvo EC230 excavator is the largest of its kind and has been designed to match the capabilities of a diesel-powered one. With its battery-powered operation, this machine not only reduces emissions but also minimizes noise levels during construction activities.

In order to load trucks with export material from the South Yard at La Brea Station, Skanska has replaced their existing Komatsu PC228 excavator with the Volvo EC230. This 90-day trial program is one among four such initiatives taking place in North America and aims to evaluate how well an electric excavator of this size performs on large-scale projects like the Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project.

According to James Bailey, EVP of Skanska USA Civil: “The construction industry accounts for 40% of energy-related carbon emissions.” As part of their commitment towards being thought leaders in sustainable solutions for this sector, Skanska collaborates with innovation leaders and partners such as LA Metro,Sunbelt, and Volvo,to share knowledgeand resourcesin pursuitof net-zero solutions.”
