"Draft Plan to Remake San Francisco's Shoreline Issued by Army Corps and Port"

The San Francisco Chronicle has reported that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Port of San Francisco have released a draft plan to transform the city’s shoreline in response to future sea level rise. The ambitious project, with a budget of $13.5 billion, would be the largest infrastructure undertaking in San Francisco’s history.

If approved by Congress in 2026 and completed by 2040, this project would take less time than it took to build the eastern span of Bay Bridge (16 years). According to Brad Benson, director of Port of San Francisco’s Water Resilience Program, this plan is a result from years spent analyzing risks and now offers solutions for adapting to those risks.

The initial focus will be on completing work within 15 years after receiving federal funding approval from Congress. The Army Corps will cover 65% while remaining costs will fall on San Francisco itself.
