Development "Revitalized Mixed-Use Development: Former Courthouse and Jail in East Cambridge"

A new development has been unveiled by a partnership between Leggat McCall Properties (LMP), Granite Properties, and CBRE Investment Management. Located at 40 Thorndike in East Cambridge, MA, this mixed-use project combines office space, retail shops, and residential units. This marks the culmination of ten years of planning and construction to transform the former Edward J. Sullivan Courthouse and jail.

Previously owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in a vacant state with outdated facilities, this property was acquired for redevelopment. Its prime location on the edge of Kendall Square presented an ideal opportunity for conversion into a modern structure with financing provided by Bank OZK.

The newly renovated 20-story building offers top-notch Class-A office space spanning 422,000 square feet on its upper floors while also featuring 48 inclusionary residential apartments on levels two and three. The ground floor is dedicated to retail shops as well as restaurants along with childcare services and meeting spaces.

Rob Dickey , Executive Vice President (EVP)and partner at LMP expressed his satisfaction saying that “40 Thorndike” stands tall today because it was made possible through collaboration among many determined individuals.” He further added that what used to be an old government building has now been transformed into a sustainable asset that will benefit both local businesses as well as residents for generations to come.
