Demolishing Old Gym: UT Allocating $25M for Project

The University of Texas men’s basketball team now plays its games in the Moody Center, a multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas. The Erwin Center, which was completed in 1977 for a total cost of $34 million and could accommodate up to 16,540 spectators for basketball games and up to 17,900 spectators for concerts is no longer needed. As such it will cost an estimated $25 million to demolish it with demolition expected later this year and completion by October 2024.

The new 10k plus seat Moody Center opened in 2022 at a construction cost of $375 million providing modern facilities compared to those offered by Erwin Centre. This investment will allow UT’s men’s basketball team access state-of-the art amenities while also freeing up land that can be used towards expansion plans for Dell Medical School.
