Amazon Data Services Inc., the data center arm of Amazon, has submitted plans to demolish and replace nine office buildings in Sterling, Virginia with four new data centers totaling over 900,000 square feet. The Loudoun Commerce Center buildings, Manekin Plaza buildings and Ridgetop Circle buildings are all set for demolition. The new facilities will include a two-story facility on Nokes Boulevard; a three-story facility on Manekin Plaza; as well as two more data centers located on Ridgetop Circle.
Since 2006 Amazon has invested over $35 billion in the state of Virginia through its expanding presence within the region’s data center market – acquiring both vacant land and existing office spaces alike. This is further demonstrated by their recent demolition of Belvoir Corporate Campus in Springfield which was repurposed into a functional space for developing additional datacenters.
The move highlights not only Amazon’s commitment to economic growth but also its strategy for creating efficient use out of empty offices throughout the area – providing an opportunity to maximize potential while simultaneously reducing wastefulness across multiple sectors within Virginia’s economy.
