According to a recent CBRE survey, the Atlanta area saw a significant 211% increase in data center projects under construction in 2023, making it the top city for growth in this sector. As of March 31st, Georgia Power reported tracking 42 data center projects currently in progress.
While many of these developments are located outside of urban areas, there has been some development within the city itself. In response to concerns about prime real estate being taken up by data centers and their impact on transit and green spaces like trails, efforts are being made to restrict their location. The City Council is considering banning new data centers within the Beltline Overlay District and within half a mile of MARTA stations.
While some see these facilities as essential for cloud computing and other digital capabilities, opponents argue that they do not provide enough permanent jobs for local communities while consuming large amounts of land, water, and electricity. This has led to growing opposition towards further expansion of data centers in Atlanta.
