D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Washington Commanders have announced a landmark agreement to bring the NFL team back to the District with the construction of a new stadium on the 180-acre RFK campus site.

Under the terms of the plan, the Commanders will lead the development with an investment of at least $2.7 billion to build a state-of-the-art, roofed stadium with a capacity of 65,000 seats. The District government will support the project by contributing $500 million toward horizontal and non-vertical construction costs. Additionally, the city plans to issue a $175 million revenue bond to support parking infrastructure development.

Events DC, the city’s sports and convention authority, will allocate up to $181 million for the development of parking garages located near new community recreation facilities planned for the area. Further investment from the District includes $202 million earmarked for utilities infrastructure, roadway improvements, and a transit study with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).

“We are thrilled to welcome the Commanders back home to the Sports Capital,” said Mayor Bowser. “When we got control of 180 acres of land on the banks of the Anacostia, we knew right away that partnering with the Commanders would be the fastest and surest route to bringing the RFK campus to life.”

This announcement marks a major step forward in redeveloping the historic RFK site and revitalizing the surrounding community with a transformative mixed-use project anchored by professional football.
