The District of Columbia (D.C.) has signed an agreement with the Therme Group, a Vienna-based wellness company, to search for a site within the city to establish a “well-being resort”. The agreement prevents the company from looking for sites in Maryland or Virginia suburbs for at least one year.
Therme has opened several locations in Europe and is expanding its reach into Asia and Canada by investing approximately $333 million in Toronto’s planned waterfront resort. Additionally, they are searching across U.S., but D.C.’s priority remains high on their list of potential sites which would feature thermal bathing, sauna treatments, “family-friendly water-based features” as well as arts and cultural programming along with health spa services .
The D.C government anticipates that this project will generate 7200 construction jobs followed by 700 – 800 permanent jobs when completed; additionally it is expected to bring $1 billion nominal tax revenue over 25 years period .
