The Cordish Companies have begun a long-planned conversion of the historic former Midland office building in downtown Kansas City into workforce housing, as reported by the Kansas City Business Journal. The property will offer 135 studio and one-bedroom apartments, intended to be affordable for renters earning up to 80% of the area’s median family income.
Built in 1927, this office building and its adjoining 3,000-seat theater were listed on the National Register of Historic Places back in 1977. Helix Architecture + Design – also responsible for renovating said theater during mid 2000s – is looking to combine historic character with modern finishes that evoke Cordish’s “Light” buildings; RD Jones + Associates are acting as interior designers on this project.
