“Convenience Stores: A Shift in Operations”

"Convenience Stores: A Shift in Operations"

In the past, convenience stores (C-stores) were primarily seen as quick stops for gas and snacks. However, according to a recent article by Placer.ai analysts, this perception is changing.

The article states that convenience stores are now being viewed as affordable destinations for not only fueling up but also for quick meals, snacks and other necessities. This shift is supported by data from Placer.ai which shows an increase in monthly visits to convenience stores since February 2024. To keep up with this trend, many chains are expanding their offerings.

For example, national chain 7-Eleven has taken on the role of a “grab-and-go” food and beverage destination. They have also implemented limited-time offers such as their annual Slurpee Day on July 11th where they offer free Slurpees to attract more foot traffic.

Additionally, regional c-stores like Wawa and Sheetz (based in Pennsylvania) and Buc-ee’s (headquartered in Texas) are expanding into new areas outside of their home states. Wawa has plans to open locations in Florida, Georgia and Alabama while Sheetz is looking at North Carolina and Tennessee markets. Buc-ee’s is also branching out into Arkansasand North Carolina.

This expansion into new regions presents significant opportunities for growth not only through increased store count but also by reaching new consumer bases with unique visitation patterns specific to each market.” By tapping into these local behaviors,” the article explains,”c-stores can further expand their target audience.”
