Houston First Corporation has chosen Hines to oversee the $2 billion redevelopment of the George R. Brown Convention Center and its surrounding district.
The goal of this project is to modernize and expand the convention center, which has been in operation for 37 years. By adding new amenities and entertainment options, it aims to attract larger conferences and meetings, bringing significant economic benefits to Houston.
In their role as development manager, Hines will be responsible for all aspects of the project’s execution. This includes managing timelines, budgets, construction documents development, as well as working with contractors to ensure that all improvements are completed on schedule with high quality standards and safety measures.
Despite its hefty price tag of $2 billion dollars, the project will not require any additional funding from taxpayers. Instead,it will be financed through incremental Hotel Occupancy Tax revenue allocated by the state government.
Phase I construction is set to begin in 2025,and it will focus on creating new meeting spaces south of the existing convention center. This exciting renovation contract marks another milestone for Hines’ impressive portfolio.
