The Kennedy Expressway rehabilitation project has entered its second phase, which began earlier than expected due to favorable weather conditions. Commuters traveling downtown will now experience lane closures, resulting in slower traffic.
This phase of construction will involve the partial closure of both the express lanes and far left local lanes for a minimum of six months. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, this stage focuses on rehabilitating the reversible express lanes on I-90/94 from Edens Expressway junction to Ohio Street.
The ongoing project is estimated to cost over $150 million and is expected to span three years. It includes rehabilitating 36 bridges and upgrading various elements such as overhead sign structures, signage with modern LED lights, pavement patching, and structural painting. The work commenced in spring 2023 and will continue over three consecutive construction seasons.
