**Nearly $1M Committed for Tacoma-Area Affordable Housing Development**

The South Sound Housing Affordability Partners (SSHA) have just approved their first major investment aimed at expanding affordable housing options in Pierce County. The group voted to allocate up to $966,000 toward the future construction of as many as 28 homes designated for families earning below 80% of the area’s median income.

The planned development will be located on a 4.22-acre parcel in the Frederickson area, which was acquired by the Pierce County Community Development Corporation in 2023. The funding for this initiative will come from a coalition of local governments, including contributions from the cities of Auburn, Fife, and Sumner, as well as from Pierce County.

Construction on the project is slated to begin in 2027, following the selection of a housing developer later this year.

“Affordable housing isn’t just a regional issue – it’s a local concern driven by necessity,” said Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus. “This investment is proof that when we work together, we can build and invest in a future where everyone has the opportunity to live and thrive right here in the South Sound.”
