**City Halts Redevelopment of Nolita’s Elizabeth Street Garden in Favor of Expanded Affordable Housing Plan**
The City of New York has announced it will permanently halt the controversial redevelopment plan for the Elizabeth Street Garden in the Nolita neighborhood. Instead, the Adams administration has committed to developing affordable housing across three alternative sites within the district represented by Councilmember Christopher Marte.
The original redevelopment plan for the Elizabeth Street Garden was projected to generate 123 affordable housing units. However, the new plan will yield 620 units—more than five times the number initially proposed—marking a significant increase in affordable housing availability for Lower Manhattan.
“This incredible win-win for our community shows exactly why we should never give up,” said Councilmember Marte. “Since the beginning of this fight almost a decade ago, we’ve been saying that we can save community gardens and build new affordable housing. And with this historic agreement with Mayor Eric Adams, this will be the largest influx of new, permanently affordable housing in Lower Manhattan in decades.”
As part of the agreement, Elizabeth Street Garden will continue to operate as a public green space, remaining open daily between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
