Chicago State University and the City of Chicago recently announced their partnership’s plans for a 95th Street Corridor Development at the “Re-envisioning 95th Street” event. This long-term investment aims to create a university village in the Roseland community, with an initial report funded by the Chicago Community Trust focusing on revitalizing 95th Street from Martin Luther King Drive to Cottage Grove Avenue.
The collaboration between the city and university will bring about significant changes to South Side, including mixed-use buildings with academic and commercial spaces totaling 45,000 square feet. Additionally, there are plans for student and family housing comprising of 240 units.
While this project is estimated to cost $250 million, no funds have been secured yet. The neighborhood renovations will complement other ongoing developments such as the planned $3.6 billion extension of CTA Red Line over a distance of 5.6 miles and extensive renovations scheduled forthe Metra station on 95th street.
This redevelopment plan for improving infrastructure along one of Chicago’s busiest streets showcases how partnerships can drive progress in urban development without relying solely on public funding sources.
