**New York City Council Approves Midtown South Rezoning to Add 9,500 Housing Units**

The New York City Council has approved the Midtown South Mixed-Use Plan, marking the city’s largest residential neighborhood rezoning initiative in two decades. This transformative plan is set to bring over 9,500 new housing units to the Midtown South area, including more than 2,800 units designated as permanently affordable housing.

In addition to expanding housing opportunities, the plan includes a commitment of more than $448 million for community and infrastructure investments. These funds aim to support the development of the neighborhood and improve quality of life for existing and future residents. Among the investments is over $120 million allocated specifically toward supporting the Garment District’s fashion and garment industry businesses through economic development initiatives.

“To confront the citywide housing and affordability crisis, our city must build more homes and invest in housing solutions that allow generations of New Yorkers to remain in this city,” said City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. “The Council is proud to approve the historic Midtown South Mixed-Use Plan, as well as other housing projects, that will deliver over 10,000 new homes.”

The Midtown South rezoning reflects a major step forward in addressing New York City’s ongoing housing crisis, balancing growth with affordability and long-term community investment.
