"Chicago's Historic State Street Buildings Survive Demolition Threat After a Century"

Two historic skyscrapers in Chicago’s Loop will be saved from demolition, as plans to tear them down have been abandoned. According to a report by Crain’s, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced last week that they will look for new uses for the buildings located at 202 S. State St. and 220 S. State St., which were acquired by GSA in 2007.

Initially, $52 million was set aside for their demolition under Federal legislation passed recently. However, after being listed multiple times on Preservation Chicago’s Most Endangered list and receiving a recommendation from the Commission on Chicago Landmarks to be designated as landmarks in 2023, the federal government has changed its stance and intends to redevelop these century-old structures instead of tearing them down.
