**Chicago Midway International Airport Begins $47M Runway Upgrade Project**

Chicago’s Midway International Airport has officially launched a $47 million project aimed at upgrading its main runway and enhancing vital airfield safety systems. The comprehensive initiative will involve repaving Runway 13C/31C and intersecting taxiways, modifying airfield geometry to ensure compliance with federal standards, and installing key safety enhancements such as runway guard lights and a dedicated emergency access road.

The project is being led by K-Five Construction Corporation in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Aviation. The city is pursuing more than $37 million in federal funding through the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, alongside the FAA’s Airport Improvement Grant program.

“Midway International Airport is one of the largest employers on the South Side, providing thousands of Chicagoans with quality jobs in a dynamic, ever-changing industry,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. “As we continue to Build Better Together across this city, this type of critical infrastructure investment is key to furthering economic growth and opportunity, while also providing for an even safer air travel experience for generations of Midway flyers to come.”
