Chicago Fire FC Unveils Plans for $650 Million Stadium in South Loop
Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire FC has announced plans for a new 22,000-seat stadium to be constructed at The 78, a transformative development site in Chicago’s South Loop. The stadium, with an estimated cost of $650 million, will be entirely privately funded and is scheduled to be ready for the 2028 MLS season.
“A world-class city deserves a world-class football club – with a world-class home to match,” said club chairman and owner Joe Mansueto. “We’re building one at The 78.” Mansueto emphasized that the stadium will act as a catalyst for job creation, economic development, and community engagement.
The franchise has acquired a nine-acre parcel within the larger 62-acre site of The 78. Related Midwest, the developer behind the ambitious project, will oversee construction of the stadium. Global architecture firm Gensler has been tapped to lead the design.
The 78 is a $7 billion mixed-use development poised to reshape the South Loop. In addition to the stadium, the project will eventually include restaurants, retail outlets, office space, residential units, green spaces, and an expanded Chicago Riverwalk.
This development reflects the growing momentum behind soccer in the United States and underscores Chicago Fire FC’s long-term commitment to enhancing the city’s sports and cultural landscape.
