Generator Studio, a renowned architecture and interior design firm based in Kansas City, has been chosen to lead the $65 million expansion of Fifth Third Arena for the Chicago Blackhawks. According to reports from the Kansas City Business Journal, this project is set to enhance the existing facility which serves as a practice home for one of NHL’s “Original Six” teams.
The city of Chicago has given its approval for this 135,000-square-foot expansion which will be privately funded. The new addition will include an outdoor seating area, public cafe and multipurpose event spaces. It also aims to improve pedestrian access and connectivity with the city’s public transportation system.
As per Crain’s report on the team’s zoning application, future phases of expansion may see up to 1,200 residential units along with 663 hotel rooms and retail space being added alongside parking facilities. Construction on this arena upgrade is expected to commence in early 2024 with completion targeted by early 2026. The original arena was inaugurated back in 2017.
