Chicago Approves $29 Million for South Side Regional Senior Center

The Public Building Commission of Chicago has approved $29 million for the development of the city’s first regional senior center located on the South Side.

The proposed center will be a two-story, 25,000-square-foot facility situated at 4711–55 S. Calumet Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood. A request for proposal (RFP) will soon be issued to identify a design-build firm for the project.

Funding for the senior center includes $16 million from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, with the remaining $13 million provided through tax increment financing from the city of Chicago.

The center will be constructed on vacant, city-owned land that previously housed a grocery store and has been unoccupied for over a decade. The development will take up half of the block and is located just one block from the 47th Street Green Line train station. Plans for the other half of the block may include a future housing development.

Once complete, the facility will be operated by the Chicago Department of Family & Support Services. It will include 38 parking spaces, office and event space, and a fitness room aimed at serving the needs of local seniors.

This initiative represents a key investment in community infrastructure, aiming to enhance services and resources available to older residents on the South Side.
