California Tops List for Resident Exodus, Florida and Texas Lead in Move-Ins
According to the U-Haul Growth Index, California has once again seen the largest net loss of one-way movers for four consecutive years. On the other hand, Texas has emerged as the state with the highest number of move-ins using one-way U-Haul equipment in 2023. Other states at the bottom of this list include Michigan, New Jersey, Illinois and Massachusetts. Ranking at 43rd is New York.

Following closely behind Texas is Florida which ranks second for move-ins according to data from U-Haul. The index takes into account over 2.5 million transactions involving one-way moves made through U-Haul trucks, trailers and containers across North America annually.

U-Haul International president John “J.T.” Taylor stated that while there was a slight decrease in one-way transactions compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2023,
the same trends were observed among customers moving between states.
He also noted that migration towards Southeastern and Southwestern states remains prominent while demand for equipment out of certain markets on both coasts mirrors previous moving cycles.
