Building Mini-Nuclear Reactor in Texas Gulf Town: Dow and X-Energy Collaboration

Dow Chemical and X-energy are collaborating to develop the UCC1 Seadrift Operations manufacturing site for its proposed advanced small modular reactor nuclear project. Located between Houston and Corpus Christi on the Gulf Coast, Dow’s 4,700 acre Seadrift facility produces more than 4 million pounds of materials annually for a variety of applications including food packaging and preservation, footwear, wire and cable insulation, solar cell membranes as well as medical device & pharmaceutical product packaging.

The joint venture seeks to provide safe & reliable zero carbon emissions power & steam at the Seadrift site in lieu of existing energy sources nearing end-of-life. The agreement includes up to $50 million in engineering work split evenly between both companies. Construction is slated to begin in 2026 with completion expected by decade’s end.
