A historic building in Kansas City, known as the former Weld Wheel Industries building, has been demolished to make room for a new $500 million development project. The nine-story structure, located at 933 Mulberry Street and over a century old, was taken down by Remco Demolition LLC to pave the way for upcoming housing, office and retail spaces in the revitalized West Bottoms neighborhood.
The property’s owner is New York-based developer SomeraRoad Inc., who successfully secured public financing for their ambitious $526.7 million redevelopment plan of central West Bottoms. This includes converting 13 historic buildings into modern spaces that will add approximately 1,600 new housing units.
SomeraRoad Inc.’s proposal also won approval from city officials for a five-story apartment complex with 290 units and over 9,000 square feet of retail space. Construction is expected to take place between 2025 and 2028. Additionally, the city has agreed to provide $2.6 million in funding towards demolition costs incurred by SomeraRoad Inc., as the vacant building had been unused since its closure in2003.
This recent development marks an exciting milestone towards transforming Kansas City’s landscape with innovative projects like this one.
