The historic West Bottoms neighborhood in Kansas City is undergoing a major redevelopment project, with the recent demolition of the former Weld Wheel Industries building. The 114-year-old, nine-story building was taken down by Remco Demolition LLC to make way for new housing, office and retail space. This $500 million development project at 933 Mulberry Street is being spearheaded by New York-based developer SomeraRoad Inc.
As part of this ambitious plan to revitalize the area, SomeraRoad Inc. has secured public financing for a total investment of $526.7 million. One key aspect of this project involves converting 13 historic buildings into modern spaces that will include approximately 1,600 new housing units.
One notable component within this larger development plan is an upcoming five-story apartment complex with 290 units and over 9,200 square feet dedicated to retail space. Construction on this particular phase is expected to take place between now and late-2028.
To help offset some costs associated with demolishing the vacant Weld Wheel Industries building (which had been unoccupied since back in ’03), Kansas City officials have agreed to provide SomeraRoad Inc.with $2.6 million in financial assistance as well.
