Despite its initial promise, the 1stBank Center in Broomfield faced a different fate as demolition work finally commenced almost a year after its permanent closure. The decision to close the facility was made by the Broomfield Urban Renewal Authority’s Board of Directors in May 2023.
According to Broomfield City Council, the event center with a capacity of 6,500 failed to live up to expectations as it struggled to attract sporting events and concerts since its opening in late 2006. As a result, it never turned a profit despite costing $45 million for construction and an additional $3 million for demolition.
The first phase of demolition will involve removing non-recyclable materials such as insulation, drywall and roof components. The remaining recyclable materials like asphalt and concrete will be taken out towards the end of the six-month project period. Demolition is scheduled on weekdays with some Saturdays included. There are currently no plans set for repurposing or developing on this land once cleared.
