**Boston Planning Advances Dana-Farber’s $1.68 Billion Cancer Center Project**
The Boston Planning Department has recommended approval for four major development projects, including a significant new cancer center in the Longwood Medical Area. Valued at approximately $1.68 billion, the proposed development involves the demolition of the current Joslin Diabetes Center building at 1 Joslin Place. In its place, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute plans to construct a 14-story facility featuring around 300 inpatient beds and 20 observation beds, along with clinical support space for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
According to the Planning Department, the proposal addresses a growing demand for inpatient cancer care, driven by factors such as an aging population and advancements in cancer treatment technologies. Officials emphasize that the project would enable the expansion of cutting-edge cancer care services in the region.
The development will also include key infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing connectivity and operational efficiency. This includes the construction of both a tunnel beneath and a bridge over Brookline Avenue, linking the new facility directly to Dana-Farber’s existing building.
