BMW Begins Construction on Upstate South Carolina Electric Vehicle Battery Plant

BMW has broken ground on its $700 million high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, SC. The 315-acre site will be home to a 1-million-square-foot facility where electric vehicle batteries will be produced. This includes a technology building, cafeteria, energy center and fire department as part of BMW’s $1.7 billion investment in EV production within the state – including their nearby Plant Spartanburg location. Envision AESC is also making battery cells that are shipped to Woodruff for use in EV batteries.

At the groundbreaking ceremony Robert Engelhorn – CEO of BMW Manufacturing – commented: “Today marks the start of a new era at Plant Spartanburg as we prepare to produce fully electric BMW X models for the world; this road towards our future begins here in Woodruff with our legacy of producing high quality vehicles right here within America.”  By 2030 it is expected that six fully electric vehicles will have been produced by BMW US locations alone!
