Berkadia and NYU Stern Partner on Multifamily Investment Case Competition

Berkadia and NYU | Stern have joined forces to offer a unique opportunity for students at leading business schools across the United States. The inaugural Multifamily Investment Case Competition, held from November 14-16 at New York University’s Stern School of Business, challenged teams of students to address the pressing issue of affordable housing in the nation.

During this event, student teams from top institutions such as Columbia Business School, UCLA Anderson School of Management, University of Florida, Wharton School at UPenn, University of Wisconsin and NYU Stern heard from industry experts including David Leopold (SVP and head of affordable housing at Berkadia), Bob Hart (President & CEO TruAmerica Multifamily), Mark Willis PhD. These professionals provided an overview on current challenges related to housing affordability as well as solutions being implemented in different states and cities.

The case competition required teams to develop a comprehensive investment strategy for a workforce housing fund that catered specifically to middle-income renters. They were also tasked with coming up with innovative solutions for addressing the nationwide affordable housing crisis.

A panel consisting Gregory Bates (President & CEO GID), Kalin Bracken(Head Real Estate World Economic Forum), Rachel Diller(Senior Managing Director & CIO Bridge Workforce/Affordable Housing), Sharon Wilson Géno(Multifamily Housing Council President ), Mary Ann King(Co-head Institutional Solutions Berkadia ), Dillon Lorda(Director/Portfolio Manager AEW Private Equity Group)and Stella Pappas(Senior Managing Director/Head Investor Relations TruAmerica Multifamily ) served as judges during this live case competition event.

Mary Ann King shared her thoughts on participating in this event: “I was honored to be selected as a judge for this competition where I had the pleasure meeting all the participants. This event would not have been possible without the dedication of university teams, contributions from my fellow judges and support from NYU.”

This partnership between Berkadia and NYU | Stern has resulted in a successful multifamily investment case competition that has brought together top students, industry experts, and professionals to address one of the most pressing issues in our nation today.
