Austin Allocates $2 Billion for Airport Upgrades

The City of Austin has set aside a budget of nearly $2 billion for upgrades and enhancements at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The largest contract, worth $1.03 billion, has been awarded to Hensel Phelps Construction to construct a new concourse and accompanying tunnel.

According to the Austin Business Journal, this new concourse could potentially add 20 additional gates to the airport. Once the contract is finalized, Hensel Phelps will have approximately 3 and a half years to complete construction.

In addition to this major project, there are two other contracts in place for further improvements at ABIA. A design contract worth $45 million has been awarded Skidmore Owings and Merrill LLP for a new arrivals and departures hall. There is also an $820 million construction deal with Austin Commercial LP for this same hall; they have about 4 years allotted time frame in which they must finish their work.

Back in August of last year, city council approved an additional sum of around $500 million towards revamping the airport’s taxiways so that they can accommodate both current as well as future growth needs at ABIA.This includes designing plans for connecting tunnels between old & new concourses along with reworking baggage systems accordingly.
