Austin 3M Office Subleasing 200K SF: Is Flex Scheduling to Blame?

Blaming flexible work schedules, 3M Co. has placed 204,000 square feet of North Austin office space on the sublease market at the Parmer Austin campus. This includes lab space and other leased spaces that 3M plans to continue occupying. According to Tim Post of 3M, their offices were built when working on-site was expected for all employees; however this pandemic changed things and they have since moved to a more flexible work model with fewer people working in-person. Despite these changes, Post emphasizes that 3M remains committed to its presence in Austin where it reported having 349 employees at year end – down from 500 priorly before layoffs which may reach up 6,000 workers total across the company’s locations worldwide.
