Amkor Technology is moving forward with a major semiconductor packaging and testing complex in Peoria, with total planned investment now at $7 billion. The company is developing a large-scale advanced manufacturing facility that is scheduled to begin operations in 2027, positioning the site as a significant node in the chip supply chain.
Amkor initially broke ground on the Peoria project in October of last year and subsequently expanded its investment plans from $2 billion to $7 billion. The multibillion-dollar commitment underscores the company’s decision to scale up its presence in Peoria beyond the scope of the original manufacturing facility concept.
The Phoenix Business Journal reports that the Peoria facility has already secured notable customer backing. Amkor has lined up major customer commitments from Apple and Nvidia, along with a 10-year agreement with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. These long-term and blue-chip relationships provide a demand base for the advanced packaging and test operations planned for the site.
The project is being developed as a 2.3 million-square-foot manufacturing campus delivered in two phases. Within that footprint, Amkor plans to deliver more than 750,000 square feet of cleanroom space dedicated to packaging and testing functions. At full build-out, the company expects the campus to support approximately 3,000 new jobs, reflecting the labor needs of a large, specialized industrial operation.
In addition to the core campus, Amkor has recently acquired 67 acres near the advanced packaging and test facility. The land purchase is intended to support potential future expansion of the complex, giving the company the option to further scale operations if warranted by customer demand and strategic needs.
Taken together, the expanded investment, phased 2.3 million-square-foot campus plan, and adjoining land acquisition indicate that Amkor is building a sizable, dedicated footprint for semiconductor packaging and testing activity in Peoria, anchored by long-term commitments from several of the sector’s largest end-users.
