AECOM Chosen as Designer for Portage Bay Bridge Replacement

AECOM, a leading infrastructure consulting firm, has been chosen as the primary designer for the SR 520 Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid Project by the Washington State Department of Transportation. The project will be part of a design-build team led by Skanska and involves replacing the current Portage Bay Bridge and constructing a landscaped lidded segment in Seattle’s North Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Upon completion, commuters traveling across Lake Washington and through the SR 520 corridor will have access to new ramps, seismically resilient structures, and improved connections to transit options as well as local streets. Additionally, regional shared-use trails will also be enhanced.

“We are thrilled to continue our longstanding partnership with WSDOT in meeting critical infrastructure needs for one of Puget Sound’s busiest highway corridors,” stated Matt Crane, CEO of AECOM’s U.S. West region.

AECOM will oversee technical design aspects for two new parallel bridges – one designated for eastbound traffic while another is dedicated to westbound traffic – that replace an outdated structure from the 1960s with a stronger seismic-resistant alternative. Furthermore, the project includes building a landscaped lid over SR 520 between Delmar Drive Eastand10th Avenue East which aims at improving regional mobility by completing transit enhancements within RedmondandSeattle undertheSR 520 Program umbrella.
